Activity 2

La Seu d'Ègara

The first thing to see in Terrassa is La Seu d’Ègara. Egara is a municipality in Roman Hispania on which the current city sits and La Seu is a set, or monumental set of the churches of Sant Pere, which was built in 450.

There you can see the old cathedral and the baptistery, the funerary temple and the parish temple. In addition, mosaics and Roman columns from the Visigoth period are preserved in Europe.

Masia Freixa

Terrassa has a past closely linked to Visigothic and Roman culture. Furthermore, we can also find modernist-style buildings, such as the Masía Freixa that is located in the Sant Jordi park.

It seems that it was a house or land but in reality it was built to be a factory, more specifically a spinning mill or a storage site. It was built in a field, which is why it is called a “farmhouse”. Its parabolic arches inspired by Gaudí's work stand out, the great white tower that emulates a minaret, columns that simulate the appearance of trees, ceiling crystals that shine in the light ... A unique piece of architecture.

In order to appreciate this sea of waves, you have to go up to the viewpoint of the museum, next to the cafe-restaurant. The viewpoint is free. This building, the work of Lluís Muncunill i Parellada, was built as an 11,000 m2 factory. More, currently, it has become the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia where you can see old machines, some even running, and follow the path that the wool followed until it was processed.

mNACTEC

In the science museum, it used to be a textile factory. In that space, the donkey was a machine that was connected to all the textile factory spaces thanks to that machine all the others went.

Also the chimneys that are like columns are related to the textile factory for the simple reason that those machines used coal and somewhere they had to remove the smoke.

The happy house of Sagrera

Apart from Masía Freixa there is another modernist style place that we recommend visiting in Terrassa: Casa Alegre de Sagrera. It is one of the most classic modernist bourgeois residences in the city.

Upon arrival, you will find a complete residential complex, but only one can be visited as it has become a museum: the Casa Alegre de Sagrera. This was built at the beginning of the 19th century, more specifically in 1911. Work of the municipal architect Melcior Vinyals Muñoz, who reformed it until it became an industrial bourgeois house of the time, following the modernist style.

Although the furniture is not original, the wall paintings, reliefs, stained glass windows have been preserved ... You can also visit its old garden, now converted into a park.

The Carthusian castle of Vallparadís and the palace tower

It is true that Terrassa has a great Roman and Visigothic influence, but there are also monuments that have survived in time since the Middle Ages. The most outstanding one would be the Carthusian castle of Vallparadís, which dates from the 12th century and was converted into a Carthusian between the 14th-15th centuries.

It can be reached from La Seu d’Ègara, crossing a small part of the Vallparadís park. One of the most important historical and artistic monuments in the city, and also one of the largest urban parks in Catalonia with almost 400,000 m2. It is not the only place related to the Middle Ages that we recommend, as you should also visit the Palau tower, the only element that is preserved from the old Castle Palace of Terrassa.
